Being 37 years old and a new teacher lends itself to the obvious. It's taken a while for me to find my true calling. I have to be a man who loves teaching to go back to school and retrain this late in the game. Both are truisms in my case. I love teaching, and cannot wait to get my classroom and start. During Student Teaching I joked all the time, "You mean they are gonna pay me for this?" It has taken me a while to get here but in that journey, truths about myself have emerged. I have worked very hard to get here, very hard, and this is what I want to do more than anything else in the world. Because it has taken me so long to get here, I bring skills from my other professions that will be valuable to my future students and the district that manages to get me. I bring a maturity and direction of purpose that come with not only my age, but in the apparent path I have taken to get here. I also bring a multitude of interests that come from other professions along the way, as well as hobbies. Some of the items I will discuss may better be served on the "Career Goals" page, but I really liked the banner I made for this page above (the skates took a while) and decided to situate some of my skills and goals here.

My days in Sheridan, Wyoming were some of the best of my life. I went out to Sheridan College sight unseen to enroll in their Police Science Program. While I was out there, a friend of mine had just been fired from the overnight DJ spot at KWYO. In a truly magnanimous gesture she told me I would be good at it so I went down and applied. In no time I went from being the overnight guy, to the Music Director and Afternoon Drive Time DJ. This is one of the things I loved about Sheridan, if you had ideas and worked hard, you advanced and did well. My best friend was the Program Director so needless to say, I did not go home that summer. Instead I spent the summer learning the radio business.
I have watched recently as High Schools around the area have begun their own radio stations. WHSS Hamilton High School, WLHS Lakota High School, are two stations I actually listen to with some frequency. I would be more than interested in starting or joining efforts to put localized radio programming out there. My previous experience in radio as well as my current interest in independent radio such as WNKU and WMUB (before it merged with WVXU) would be beneficial to either maintaining a program in an advisory capacity, or even starting a program. This is something I feel strongly about.

I have discussed this in length on the Career Goals Page, but it is through my current position that I have established contacts in the corporate property management fields that can allow this idea to take flight and possibly become an interstate program.

Technology:
Of course if you have navigated to this site it has become clear that I love and delve in all things technical. I have used a wide variety of packages and have a working knowledge of some rare ones as well.
Adobe Creative Suite:
This site as well the banners and various other items was built using Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop and other applications. When Adobe merged with Macromedia, I merged as well. These skills can be used to maintain websites for the school or sports teams and various other duties from designing programs for school functions or brochures etc. I have had some limited experience in working with a very talented Graphic Designer. More importantly, the Creative Suite allows me to create visually appealing lessons.

FCP iMovie and Final Cut Pro:
These two video production packages when combined can create just about any kind of visual project or technique that you might see on your television. My knowledge of these applications would make me an asset when working with the AV department as well as some of my other goals when it comes to making documentaries for the Newcomb Foundation and other projects.
Many others:
From my use of Powerpoint for teaching to the use of the internet and even creating podcasts for my students, it is apparent that I believe in teaching with tech and am open, in fact, excited to volunteer to pilot programs, professional development, or even just sit in on any and all tech tutorials I can get my hands on. The practical applications that a building in which I am employed may benefit are too many to name. My dream, of course, would be a Smartboard!

Sports:
I am a hockey coach and Referee certified by USA Hockey so wherever I teach, I will be quite interested in either joining an existing club, but even starting a new program. It is surprisingly easy to do. I would build the program as a club team then eventually make the move into the OHSAA or Kentucky and Indiana's equivalent governing body.
usa hockey!!

I am also interested in coaching Football and really any number of sports. I love to coach, and feel like the experience benefits my teaching as much as it rewards my efforts.

  Law:
I bring a knowledge of the law to my job through my previous employment. I would certainly be interested in teaching law classes as part of the Social Studies Curriculum and with my experience, I can draw upon my knowledge to create meaningful real world lessons.
Along those same lines, I have had hours upon hours of driver training in the capacity of Law Enforcement from defensive driving to pursuit to you name it. While I do not envision teaching students to power out of turns, I have been exposed to some of the top driver training professionals in the country who have given me a good idea of how a professional teaches driver's training. I could use this knowledge to assist or even augment a school driver training program.

    Art:
I like to paint with acrylics and could see myself participating in art clubs or even teaching art appreciation as part of the Social Studies Curriculum. I have a passion for art, and use period art when teaching a unit in History.
